XII International
Symposium on Tardigrada
The conference opened with a presentation
dedicated to the memory of Clark
Beasley, who passed away soon before the Symposium. The meeting
was attended by 77 tardigradologists from 21 countries and 5 continents
(Africa (represented for the first time), Asia, Europe, North and South
America).
During the congress 36
talks (in 6 thematic sessions) and 40 posters (in a single session) were
presented. The topics discussed at the Symposium included taxonomy,
phylogeny, morphology, biogeography, ecology, physiology, molecular
genetics, genomics and life histories.
The Young Scientist Award for the best
oral presentation and the best poster was given to
Eliana Beltran (Colombia)
and to Vladimir Gross
(USA), respectively. The closing lecture was a magnificent show by
Diane Nelson. This was the first tardigrade
Symposium held in Portugal.
